Highbury Stud - History

A little bit of history..........

Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys are native to the Mediterranean Islands of Sicily and Sardinia, where despite their size were used as pack animals. Now almost extinct in their native land they are very popular in the USA and this popularity is spreading across the Atlantic, not only to the UK but to other European countries such as Holland, Belgium and Germany.

The Miniature Donkey is said to possess the affectionate nature of a Newfoundland, the resignation of a cow, the durability of a mule, the courage of a tiger and the intellectual capability only slightly inferior to mans. What more can one say!

A true Miniature Mediterranean Donkey stands no taller than 36” high (average is 30”-34”) and ideally has 3 or more generations of pedigree. A Miniature is not deemed mature until 3 years of age, and it is only then that breeding can be considered if the donkey is of good quality.

To ensure the welfare and improvement of the breed, The Miniature Mediterranean Donkey Association (MMDA) was set up in 1995.
The Association maintains a Stud Book of which donkeys that have proven ancestry are eligible. They also maintain a number of other general registers.
